7 Most Common Stress Triggers And How To Deal With Them

I have recently written about various ways of dealing with stressful situations whenever they come up. While it is great to know about ways to deal with stress, it is even better to know how to prevent these situations from even arising!

If we are able to narrow our stress triggers down, we are able to expect and prevent our stress from taking control of our lives.

In this article I will be writing about the most common stress triggers that we all face in our daily lives. Furthermore, I will delve into some ways that we can prevent ourselves from getting overly stressed from those situations.

In the future I will write a more in-depth article about ways we can prevent ourselves from letting stress take control of our lives. If you are interested in this, make sure you keep an eye on my most recent posts as-well as my archives articles!

So without further ado, let’s get into the 7 common stress triggers we all face.

1. Undergoing Change

Whether we realize it or not, all of us have a wide variety of routines that help us throughout the day. A routine is simply a bunch of habits that all follow one another. If this is repeated regularly per day or once everyday, you have a routine.

Classic examples are morning routines. Do you wake up, eat breakfast, watch some youtube and then brush your teeth? Well that was your morning routine.

When for whatever reason we change or stop following these routines, we can experience stress.

The largest amount of stress is felt when we undergo significant change. For example we move to a new city to study at university, or we change jobs. These moments can be some of the most stress periods of our lives.

It is seldomly a small period of stress. Knowing that you will likely change jobs in the next few months will produce stress for all of that time. Such long term stress is called chronic stress, and it can be extremely detrimental to your overall health!

One of the best countermeasures for this is to ensure that you have an optimistic outlook on life. When you are convinced that everything will turn out alright in the end, your body will be able to negate most of the stress and worry you might have of the future.

2. Worrying About Something

Worry is the main cause of stress, and it can be due to whatever reason. This section is dedicated to a theoretically simple, but practically difficult solution.

The best and most effective way to decrease stress, is to simply stop worrying about things that are not under your control!

It is very easy to say and understand this, but practicing it proves to be a lot more difficult. That being said, it is certainly possible if you commit yourself to learning how to let go that which you have no influence over.

In the future I will write a dedicated guide with practical steps explaing just how we can learn to let go of that which we cannot control. If you are interested in learning this, then make sure you check out my most recent posts, as well as my archived articles!

3. Overwhelming Responsibilities

When we are really chasing after our dreams and goals, we tend to take on a lot of work to reach these aspirations as quickly as we can. As a result, we habe a tendency of taking on too much. This results in us not being able to finish everything we are taking on, which can be a major source of stress.

Part of life is learning what you are capable off. If you have not learned this lesson yet, I encourage you to try and find your boundaries. The only real way to do is is to overload yourself with work, and see what you can get done. Pretty quickly you will get a good idea of what you are capable, and you’ll understand where your limits lie.

In my personal opinion, it is always better to act slightly cautious and careful when taking on new responsibilities. If it turns out that you are capable of more, you can always add extra workload after you have made that realization. If you choose to take on too much at the start, you risk burning yourself out without ever getting the results you were hoping for.

4. Financial Problems

Since money is such an important aspect of our lives, it comes to no surprise that a majority of people in the world stress massively of their financial situation. After all, if you are unable to support yourself and your loved ones, you are in real trouble.

This is not a finacial blog, so I am unable to give you tips to better your money spending habits. If you want a good way to solve your financial troubles, try and give this article a read from NBC.

While you might think this only entails to your worries about money, finacial problems can often escalate further. In the following point I discuss relationship related stress. One of the reasons you might experience stress in your relationships can be because of money related issues.

Ensure that you have your finances and spending habits firmly under control to prevent the issue from evolving into a disaster!

Having people around us is an important part of our life, and extremely valuable for our long term health. That being said, it doesn’t always go as smoothly as we would like!

There will be plenty of moments in your life where your main source of stress comes from the people around you. It is simply unavoidable! It is important to distinguish between the different kind of people giving you stress however.

You might have people in your surroundings who are bullies, or who just do not want to see you succeed in life. They can be major sources of stress and you have to cut them out of your life as soon as you can!

On the flip side, you might be having an argument with your mom. Whether you like it or not, this will still give you some kind of stress. It is important to solve your issues, but do not let it destroy or ruin your meaningful relationships, as they are crucial to your health in too many ways to mention!

Stress from relationships can also be created by circumstances not even involving you and another person. If you and your partner are very busy for example. It may be hard to spend a lot of time together, and this can cause stress between the two of you.

In order to decrease relationship related stress, communication with those in your social circle is key! When you talk about problems, you come up with solutions and you will feel relieved. This is the type of stress that can be easily solved if you just communicate your thoughts and feelings clearly!

6. Feeling Stuck In Life

We all have dreams and aspirations. We have all set goals for ourselves that we hope to achieve. For most of us, we have not reached those goals yet.

While that is perfectly normal and ok, they can become a major source of stress. Especially if we feel like we are not making any progress towards those dreams.

Sometimes it is our environment that blocks us from reaching those goals, but in a lot of cases it is also our own behaviours and habits that hold us back.

In the former case, not much can be done unfortunately. In the latter case however, a lot of progress and improvements can be achieved!

I have written an article about ways to get back in track whenever you feel lost. I will summarise some of the most important parts in this article, but if you want to know the full story, make sure you check that out here!

Analyze your daily routine

Like I mentioned before, we all have goals and aspirations for ourselves. The first step you need to take to get back on track to reaching those goals, is to simply ask yourself the following question: “How is my current routine helping me to achieve those goals?”

If you are aiming to get a promotion at work, but you have no productivity routine at work and are constantly absent-minded or taking breaks, then you are unlikely to reach that goal! You have to ensure your routine is geared towards you achieving those goals.

If you fix your routine, you are getting your life back on track!

Rediscover your lifetime goals and purpose

Fixing your routine to align with work you are required to do to reach your dreams is quite simple given you know what those dreams are. It is often the case with people who are stuck in life that they have no idea what they are living for or what they want out of life.

There can be many reasons why someone might lose sight over their life. They might simply have lost interested because their dreams turned out to be different from how they imagined, or they might have just given up when the going got tough.

No matter the reason, being lost can truly be terrifying!

One of the best ways to rediscover your goals and purpose is to go back to your childhood. What were your dreams about as a kid?

Children are the most creative people out there, and I am sure you were no different when you were a kid. Try and remember what the younger version of you aspired to be. Try and write them down on a piece of paper. This can help you re-discover lost interests and will put you back on a path that will lead you to long term success and happiness.

Using the two techniques above can be a way to decrease the stress you get from being lost in life. Like I mentioned before, make sure you check out the full article on 5 ways you can use to get back on track!

7. Lack Of Time

We all have different and varying schedules. Sometimes we have relaxing days, but often enough we experience days where we are just running around trying to balance our personal and professional lifes. Whether you are undergoing an unrealistic workload, or you just have poor time management skills, this lack of time and rushing around can become a major source of stress if experienced too frequently.

If we experience this once is a while it is not big deal. But if this is a regular day occurrence, it could lead to chronic stress. This type of stress must be avoided at all costs!

A simply solution is to simply get better at managing your time. Spend less time doing unproductive tasks, and focus on the work that will get you to where you want to get. One of the biggest tips is to limit your distractions. This could be scrolling through social media or your phone, or spending too much time chatting to your colleagues at work.

Let’s look at some quick ways we can become better at manageing our time!

Make sure that the tasks you are working on are realistic

Whenever we find ourselves setting goals for the day, we can often times be in a good mood and hence overestimate our own capabilities. Therefore we set goals that are simply unrealisitic. This can have several negative effects on our time management.

Firstly, we realize we will never complete everything we told ourselves to do, and so our motivation for the day decreases. It also teaches our minds that we cannot rely on ourselves, and this prevent us from even starting to set goals in the future!

Secondly, it usually results in us working on one big task, and ignoring the smaller things since we are so busy. Therefore at the end of the day, we see that we have only completed 1 item on our list of 5 things to do. It turns out that the day was quite unproductive as a result. It is much better to split large tasks into smaller chunks, as changing what you are working on can massively boost your productivity.

Increase your productivity when you are working

This is often a very underrated part of time management! You can be amazing at managing your time, but if you are unproductive when you are supposed to be working, you will still get nothing done. Not only that, but being productive can bring many additional benefits.

When you are productive, you get a lot of work done, there is no doubt about that. But it will also teach you a lot about yourself. You will gain experience in being able to determine just how much work you are able to complete in a certain time frame. This in turn allows you to plan your days better, since you know what you are capable off. This is a positive cycle as it helps improve your time management as well.

Productivity is an important personality trait that you will seperate your time management skills from everybody else!

I have written a much more in-depth article on ways you can improve your time management skills. If you are interested in learning more, you can find that article here!

Final Thoughts

I firmly believe that if you are able to adopt all of the above methods into your daily routine, then you are set up to live a balanced and successful life!

I hope you enjoyed the read and were able to learn something from this article. I wish you all the best on your journey ahead! Until next time!
